Strategic Planning

What is capacity building?

It’s the work we do to help your team or organization become more effective and adaptive. More creative, with stronger leadership and greater clarity about mission, strategy, and operations.

Capacity building and strategic planning are at the core of my work with organizations. Strategic planning can play many important roles in helping an organization become more effective and advancing toward its mission. And I believe that the process is as important as the result: a good strategic planning process is inclusive and highly participatory. It opens doors for communication across the organization, is an opportunity to build trust

Identify the challenges and successes of an organization, present them in a way that is constructive and fair, and use that as a tool to literally get stakeholders “on the same page” about the organization’s past and present and use that information as a point of departure to determine the kind of future its stakeholders want to see.

Who is involved?

Fundamentally, strategic planning is about setting a vision for the future, determining the priorities for achieving that vision, and developing a plan for implementation.

This is true.  But it is not all strategic planning can be.  It is also an opportunity for stakeholders to:

  • Affirm or revise mission

  • Consider the very real challenges ahead and develop scenarios for addressing them

  • Engage a diverse group of stakeholders into the conversation, offering their perspective not only on what the organization is but also what it could be

  • Reflect on the organization–where it’s been, where it is now, and where it might go– and stakeholders think

  • Examine power dynamics in the organization and how they affect programs, operations, and culture

  • Consider questions related to equity and inclusion–how do they relate to our mission, vision, and values.  How can becoming a more equitable and inclusive organization allow us to be stronger and more effective?
