Resources

There are many online resources to support capacity building. These are a few of the ones I’ve come to rely on over the years. All of them offer at least some no-cost tools and resources. Please let me know if there are any spectacular ones that should be added to this list!

AORTA
(Anti-Oppression Resource and Training Alliance)

AORTA offers facilitation, coaching, and training to groups and individuals for liberation movements. I’ve taken several of their facilitation trainings and have found them to be really helpful.

BoardSource

BoardSource is the recognized leader in nonprofit board leadership research, leadership, and support, providing nonprofit board resources to increase board effectiveness and strengthen organizational impact, and serve as the national voice for inspired and effective board leadership. I’ve learned so much about nonprofit governance from BoardSource and have used their materials in workshops and planning engagements many times.

National Council of Nonprofits

NCNP is the largest network of nonprofits in the United States, advocating for and supporting charitable organizations across the country. They are a treasure trove of data on nonprofits in the U.S. and are working overtime to advocate on behalf of the sector.

Nonprofit AF

If you need to laugh through the tears, Vu Le is your person. His weekly postings pointedly challenge the conventional wisdom about the philanthropic practice in the U.S. and its impact on nonprofits. And he’s hilarious to boot.

NFF (Nonprofit Finance Fund)

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve consulted NFF’s website and its wonderful team members over the years. NFF was one of the first to call out the pitfalls of the nonprofit business model and serves nonprofits, funders, and advisors through consulting, financing, research and advocacy, and collaborative initiatives.

Nonprofit GPS

This is a new and very timely resource, put together by the good and great people at Nonprofit Financial Commons. Nonprofit GPS helps organizations make well-informed decisions and navigate business model risks to keep the mission alive, in the most disruptive times.

GEO (Grantmakers for Effective Organizations)

GEO is a “community of funders committed to transforming philanthropic culture and practice by connecting members to the resources and relationships needed to support thriving nonprofits and communities,” and by centering equity.

The Management Center

The go-to resource on effective management for social justice and educational equity organizations. Want to find a concrete and useable tool that will help you manage your team? They’ve got you.
